Combine an international crew of over 1,000 women with a day set aside especially to celebrate the sisterhood and it was destined to be an emotional event. 261 was Switzer’s original bib number and has come to represent fearless women runners ( read my interview with Kathrine Switzer here). She famously ran the race in 1967 back when women were banned from entering, paving the way for future women runners the world over. An American author, television commentator and seasoned marathoner, Switzer is best known as the first woman to run the Boston Marathon. This is Europe's only women’s marathon and Kathrine Switzer is the face of the race. ![]() Having watched her train her heart out, struggle through injury and fight her way back to fitness, I knew I couldn’t mess it up I needed to finish the job for her. ![]() But more importantly, Annie sustained a stress fracture at mile 24 of the race the previous year and came home in a wheelchair. ![]() Running a marathon with three week’s notice is a risky game, even if you are in the middle of ultra training. When my colleague Annie asked me to run the 261 Women’s Marathon in Palma de Mallorca on International Women’s Day, I was delighted and anxious in equal measure.
